PRESS RELEASE: Ambition Loop CoGonzalo Muñoz Appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
Gonzalo Muñoz A., UN Climate Change High-Level Champion COP25 and Ambition Loop Co-Founder
May 6th, 2025 – Santiago de Chile — Ambition Loop is proud to announce that our co-founder, Gonzalo Muñoz, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). This appointment reflects Gonzalo's unwavering commitment to driving systemic change and advancing science-based climate action.
The SBTi is a global body that enables businesses and financial institutions to set ambitious emissions reduction targets grounded in climate science. As a UK-registered charity, the SBTi is governed by a Board of Trustees comprising global leaders in corporate climate action. The board holds overall responsibility for the initiative's governance, ensuring its strategic direction and integrity align with its mission to drive science-based climate action in the private sector.
Gonzalo brings decades of experience in systems transformation, circular economy, and high-impact global collaboration. He served as the UN Climate Change High-Level Champion for COP25, appointed by the Chilean Presidency in 2019. In this role, he co-led the Race to Zero and Race to Resilience campaigns alongside Nigel Topping, mobilizing thousands of non-state actors toward ambitious climate targets.
Beyond his role at Ambition Loop, Gonzalo co-founded several high-impact organizations, including Sistema B (B Corps Latin America), Manuia, and Polkura Winery. He previously founded and led TriCiclos, one of Latin America's leading circular economy and recycling enterprises. Currently, he chairs the Global Food Strategy for non-state actors from COP28 to COP30 and holds board or advisory roles at the Global Foodbanking Network, CONECTA, GFANZ Latin America, TED Future Forum, CSV Nestlé, Chapter Zero Chile, and ECODES.
He is a member of the Club of Rome and a recipient of multiple national awards in Chile for environmental leadership, innovation, and social entrepreneurship. In 2022, he was honored as a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) in Queen Elizabeth II’s final honours list, recognizing his contributions to global climate action.
Gonzalo's appointment to the SBTi Board of Trustees underscores the importance of inclusive, global, and science-driven climate leadership. His visionary approach and ability to unite public, private, and civil society actors will be instrumental in advancing the SBTi's mission.
